What you'll learn

  • Explain why nucleic-acid testing is used alongside culture, and what makes a good genetic target
  • Describe how a sample becomes purified nucleic acid, what each PCR component does, and why each cycling step happens at its temperature
  • Interpret gel bands, amplification curves, Ct values and standard-curve results at a basic level
  • Judge whether a run and a result can be trusted, using controls, contamination-control practice and the causes of false results
  • Match qPCR, RT-qPCR, LAMP, digital PCR and sequencing to suitable uses across clinical, food and environmental testing

About this course

Molecular testing moved from specialist labs into everyday use during COVID-19, and it now runs through clinical, food, pharmaceutical and environmental testing. This SkillCert Practitioner course explains how it works, step by step. You follow a sample from collection and nucleic acid extraction, through the PCR reaction and thermal cycling, to gel results, amplification curves and Ct values. You then learn how controls, clean workflows and assay performance decide whether a result can be trusted, and where newer methods such as LAMP, digital PCR and sequencing fit. Examples come from laboratories in India, the UAE and the UK. The course covers theory, principles and result interpretation; it does not include hands-on laboratory training.

Who this is for

  • Biotechnology, microbiology, life-science and allied-health students
  • Freshers joining clinical, food, pharmaceutical QC or research laboratories
  • Laboratory staff moving from culture-based work into molecular testing

Prerequisites

School-level biology. No laboratory experience is needed.

Assessment

Six module quizzes (pass mark 60%) and a final assessment of 30 questions drawn from a larger bank (pass mark 70%, unlimited attempts).

Certificate

Innoryx SkillCert Practitioner certificate, issued on passing the final assessment. SkillCert is an Innoryx professional development credential. It confirms knowledge of the course content, not hands-on laboratory competence.

Career relevance

Molecular methods are now routine in hospital, public health, food, pharmaceutical and research laboratories, and employers expect new staff to understand how results are produced and checked. This course gives you the vocabulary and judgement to start work in a molecular laboratory with confidence, and a strong base for hands-on training.
