What you'll learn

  • Explain how laboratory-acquired infections occur and distinguish biosafety from biosecurity
  • Describe the roles of the laboratory worker, supervisor, biosafety officer and institutional biosafety committee
  • Explain how agents are placed in risk or hazard groups, and why the group alone does not set the controls
  • Apply the five-step WHO risk assessment framework to a laboratory activity
  • Compare containment levels and recognise the facility features that change between them
  • Select the correct biological safety cabinet and recognise correct and incorrect use
  • Recognise good microbiological practice and choose PPE that fits the task
  • Identify aerosol-generating and sharps tasks and the controls that reduce them
  • Choose a decontamination method and explain why validation and verification matter
  • Segregate laboratory waste correctly and explain why colour codes differ by country
  • Take the correct first actions after a spill or an exposure
  • Match biosecurity controls to real lapses, including insider risk
  • Classify specimens as Category A, Category B or exempt and describe triple packaging

About this course

Every laboratory that handles biological material carries two responsibilities: protecting people from the material, and protecting the material from misuse. This course covers both. You will learn how laboratory-acquired infections actually happen, how biological agents are classified into risk groups, and how to carry out a laboratory risk assessment using the five-step framework in the WHO Laboratory Biosafety Manual, 4th edition. You will then work through containment levels, biological safety cabinets, good microbiological practice, personal protective equipment, aerosol and sharps controls, decontamination, waste segregation, spill and exposure response, biosecurity, and the packaging of specimens for transport. The course is built around real cases, including laboratory-acquired brucellosis in clinical microbiology, the 1978 Birmingham smallpox incident, the 2019 Lanzhou vaccine plant release, the 2007 Pirbright foot-and-mouth outbreak and the 2014 CDC anthrax transfer. Examples and regulatory references cover India, the UAE and the UK, so the content applies wherever you work.

Who this is for

  • Microbiology, biotechnology, MLT, life science and pharmacy students and graduates
  • Laboratory freshers and junior staff in clinical, food, pharmaceutical QC and research laboratories
  • Research assistants and technicians who handle specimens or cultures
  • Quality and laboratory staff who need a structured grounding in biosafety and biosecurity
  • Anyone preparing for laboratory roles in India, the GCC or internationally

Prerequisites

None. A basic familiarity with laboratory work is helpful but not required.

Assessment

Each module ends with a quiz that you pass at 60%, with full feedback and explanations so you can learn from each attempt. Fifteen interactive activities let you practise after each video. The course ends with a final assessment: 30 questions drawn from a larger bank, a pass mark of 70%, and unlimited attempts.

Certificate

On passing the final assessment you receive the SkillCert Practitioner certificate for Laboratory Biosafety & Biosecurity Essentials, issued by Innoryx Global Learning.

Career relevance

Biosafety awareness is expected in clinical, food, pharmaceutical and research laboratories, and it is a common interview topic for laboratory roles. This course gives you the vocabulary, the frameworks and the practical judgement that laboratory employers look for, and it leads naturally into the PCR, Infection Prevention and Control, ISO 15189 and ISO/IEC 17025 SkillCerts.
