What you'll learn

  • Explain how microbial contamination reaches sterile and non-sterile products, and apply a contamination control strategy (CCS) approach in line with EU GMP Annex 1
  • Apply ISO 14644-1 cleanroom classes and GMP Grades A to D to gowning, aseptic behaviour, and cleaning and disinfection decisions
  • Build a risk-based environmental monitoring plan, covering locations, methods, frequencies, alert and action levels, and trending
  • Carry out and interpret the core compendial tests: microbial enumeration and specified organisms, sterility, and bacterial endotoxins, each with method suitability
  • Support microbiological control of pharmaceutical water and aseptic process simulation (media fills)
  • Investigate excursions and failed results using microbial identification, root cause analysis and CAPA, and present the evidence at inspection

About this course

Microbial contamination is one of the most common reasons sterile and non-sterile medicines fail, and it can cause serious harm to patients. In 2012, contaminated steroid injections from a single compounding pharmacy caused a fungal meningitis outbreak in the United States that killed 64 people. This SkillCert Specialist course shows you how to apply contamination control in real pharmaceutical settings. You will build a contamination control strategy, run cleanrooms and gowning to EU GMP Annex 1, design a risk-based environmental monitoring programme, and control pharmaceutical water and utilities. You will also carry out and interpret microbial limits, sterility and bacterial endotoxin tests, support media fills, and investigate excursions and failed results so the evidence stands up at inspection. The course is built on EU GMP Annex 1 (2022 revision), the PIC/S GMP Guide, USP and European Pharmacopoeia microbiology chapters, ISO 14644 and EN 17141, with GCC regulatory context from the Saudi FDA and the UAE's Emirates Drug Establishment. Each module includes practical templates you can adapt for your own site, and workplace scenarios let you practise the decisions you will make on the job.

Who this is for

  • QC microbiologists and laboratory analysts in pharmaceutical, biologics and vaccine manufacturing
  • QA officers who review microbiology data, deviations and investigations
  • Production supervisors and operators working in aseptic or controlled areas
  • Validation and engineering staff supporting cleanrooms, HVAC and water systems
  • Hospital pharmacy cleanroom teams and QC staff in medical device or cosmetics manufacturing

Prerequisites

A diploma or degree in microbiology or another life science, or about one year of laboratory experience, is recommended.

Assessment

Each module ends with a quiz that you pass at 60%, with full feedback and explanations so you can learn from each attempt. Twelve interactive activities let you practise workplace decisions. The course ends with a final assessment: 30 questions drawn from a larger bank, a pass mark of 70%, and unlimited attempts.

Certificate

On passing the final assessment you receive the SkillCert Specialist certificate for Pharmaceutical Microbiology & Contamination Control, issued by Innoryx Global Learning.

Career relevance

Pharmaceutical microbiology skills are in demand in sterile and non-sterile manufacturing, biologics and vaccine plants, contract testing laboratories, hospital pharmacy cleanrooms, and medical device and cosmetics QC. With pharmaceutical manufacturing growing across the GCC and inspection standards aligned with PIC/S, employers need staff who can apply Annex 1 in practice. This course connects naturally to the ISO/IEC 17025, Laboratory Biosafety & Biosecurity and PCR & Molecular Diagnostics SkillCerts.
