What you'll learn

  • Explain how the Gulf's shallow, warm, semi-enclosed waters shape water quality risks for desalination, bathing beaches, fisheries and aquaculture
  • Interpret core physicochemical and microbiological results, including classifying a bathing beach from intestinal enterococci data using the WHO 2021 categories
  • Distinguish harmful from harmless blooms by mechanism: toxins, oxygen depletion, gill damage or sheer biomass
  • Link the main shellfish poisoning syndromes to their toxin groups, source organisms and Codex maximum levels
  • Design a risk-based monitoring plan with station types, sampling frequency and trigger levels for routine and bloom conditions
  • Collect, preserve and document seawater and phytoplankton samples so the results stand up to review
  • Calculate and interpret phytoplankton counts, toxin results and trend data, recognising when a result is invalid
  • Apply a tiered alert plan: harvest closures and reopening, beach advisories, desalination intake protection, fish farm response and reporting to the right authority

About this course

Harmful algal blooms have killed thousands of tonnes of fish in the Gulf, damaged coral reefs and forced desalination plants to shut down for months. Detecting them early, and acting before they reach seafood, swimmers or a seawater intake, is now part of everyday work for environmental laboratories, desalination operators, aquaculture farms and coastal authorities. This course teaches you to read marine water quality data, recognise when a bloom becomes harmful, design and run a monitoring programme, collect reliable samples, interpret laboratory results, and apply a tiered response plan for harvest closures, beach advisories, desalination intakes and fish farms. It is built on WHO guidance for recreational water, the Codex standard for live and raw bivalve molluscs, and real events, including the 2008–2009 Gulf bloom, the Saadiyat Beach closure and a shellfish harvest closure and reopening in Orkney, Scotland. Workplace scenarios at every step let you practise the decisions you will make on the job.

Who this is for

  • Environmental and water-testing laboratory analysts
  • Field sampling technicians
  • Desalination plant water-quality and operations staff
  • Aquaculture and shellfish farm QA staff
  • Municipality, port and coastal HSE officers
  • Marine science, environmental science and microbiology graduates targeting GCC environmental roles

Prerequisites

Basic laboratory or field experience and introductory microbiology or chemistry. No prior knowledge of harmful algal blooms is needed.

Assessment

Each module ends with a quiz that you pass at 60%, with full feedback and explanations so you can learn from each attempt. Ten interactive activities let you practise workplace decisions. The course ends with a final assessment: 30 questions drawn from a larger bank, a pass mark of 70%, and unlimited attempts.

Certificate

On passing the final assessment you receive the SkillCert Specialist certificate for Marine Water Quality & Harmful Algal Bloom Monitoring, issued by Innoryx Global Learning.

Career relevance

Coastal monitoring skills are needed in environmental laboratories, municipalities and environment agencies, desalination and power utilities, aquaculture and seafood businesses, and port and coastal HSE teams across the GCC. This course gives you the practical, evidence-based judgement those employers look for, and it connects naturally to the PCR & Molecular Diagnostics, ISO/IEC 17025 and HACCP SkillCerts.
