Laboratory Biosafety vs Biosecurity

Laboratory Biosafety vs Biosecurity: Biosafety focuses on preventing unintentional exposure to or release of biological hazards. Biosecurity focuses on preventing loss, theft, misuse or unauthorised access to biological materials and information.

Why professionals need this knowledge: Both require risk assessment, trained people, suitable facilities and procedures, but the threat scenarios are different.

Step 1: List biological materials, procedures, exposure routes, equipment and realistic accident scenarios.

Step 2: Evaluate access permissions, inventory, transport, storage, incident reporting and secure handling of sensitive information.

Step 3: Choose proportionate engineering, administrative and personal protection measures and verify staff readiness with drills.

Worked example: A microbiology laboratory may need containment practices for aerosol-generating work and separate controls for visitor access to stored cultures.

What to avoid: Assuming a biosafety cabinet alone covers all risks, neglecting inventory accuracy or discussing specific restricted materials outside approved channels. An apparently neat form is not a substitute for reliable actions and sound judgement in the real workflow.

Records and audit trail: Risk assessments, access logs, training, equipment checks, incident reviews and inventory reconciliation. Accurate records enable independent review and appropriate follow-up when concerns arise.

Try this exercise: Walk one sample route and identify where accidental exposure and unauthorised access require different controls. Discuss the exercise with an appropriately qualified colleague before applying it to a live case.

Standards and references: WHO Laboratory Biosafety Manual and applicable national biosafety and biosecurity requirements. This is educational material; the approved protocol, governing standard and local law take precedence.
